Black people don’t forget to take care of yourselves today
-
My great grandma was going to fly out to the U.S. to visit me. She’s almost 100 and I was so excited to see her! But with all the negativity towards foreigners we just don’t think it’s a safe idea. She can’t defend herself, she’s grown weak. I wish I could go out there to see her… I hope she knows I’m grateful for her. She’s everything I think a person should want to be for themselves. She came from nothing and gave my mom a world of opportunities when she chose to raise her. She was a nurse in wartime and she competed in beauty pageants when she was my age to help keep her mom alive. When her mom died she covered her body in white flowers and buried her herself. She married a man who loved her more than the earth itself and when they were both alive he would travel all over the world to bring her gifts. She always wanted to work but he insisted “your hands are so gentle. Working would take away their softness”. So he made sure she never had to. Of course, she still did it anyways while he was off traveling. They owned a store, an apartment complex, and a farm. When my grandma was bored she would tell the maids to babysit my mom so she could be the one to tend to the crops instead. I remember the first thing she did when she visited our newest house was plant an orange tree. She sang to it and asked it to make oranges for me by the time she passed. Now I have oranges every spring and while I’m happy I can enjoy the sweet taste of her fruits, I have to hold back tears remembering that she’s growing old. Realistically speaking I’m probably never going to get to see her again. It’s something I have to learn to live with. I want to write her letters now and tell her I love her before it’s too late
